A working community.
Appalachian Prose Lab is a place for writers to test ideas, sharpen stories, share hard-won knowledge, and champion one another’s work.
We believe Appalachian writing can honor where it comes from without being confined by it. Our members write across genres for readers here at home and far beyond the mountains.
What we mean by “clean prose”
Clean in theme.
Alive on the page.
“Clean” describes the spirit and content of the work—not sterile grammar, timid ideas, or stories scrubbed of real life.
We welcome honest, skillful storytelling that can wrestle with difficult things without relying on explicit content. Strong voices, imperfect people, deep questions, and the occasional misplaced comma are all at home here.
